Angels Within Us planning 10th anniversary event

A decade of community generosity will be celebrated at this year’s Angels Within Us event, Nov. 23. Every year since 2009, everyday people have donated thousands of dollars at the fundraising gala, which has been used to give a hand up to local residents experiencing difficulties.

Behind this kindness is a team of people dedicated to bringing out the best in the community. Every gala is the culmination of weeks of work by the Angels Within Us board, pictured here at last year’s event.

This year’s Angels Within Us fundraiser promises to be an event of special excitement, as the organization celebrates its 10th anniversary.

In the decade since its inception, this classic dinner, auction and dance night has become a community staple, drawing hundreds of people together each year in a display of community strength and solidarity.

Proceeds from every Angels Within Us event go to help families and individuals in need in the Town and MD of Pincher Creek.

To date, the Angels have raised over $500,000 and helped over 110 families and individuals overcome a variety of unique challenges.

Projects the Angels have helped with over the years have ranged from helping families buy groceries or medication during times of struggle to purchasing vehicles and large-scale specialty equipment for people with advanced medical needs.

This year, Angels helped with 12 different projects.

This includes the purchase of an automated bed for Kylie McMaster. The young girl has a rare neurodegenerative disorder rendering her unable to speak or move on her own, and recently underwent major surgery to correct her spine.

They also helped a local woman purchase a diabetes monitor that was not covered under her health insurance, bought a car seat for a growing family and assisted a wheelchair user in installing accessibility ramps at his home near Castle Mountain.

Sherry MacKenzie, president of Angels Within Us, says she’s amazed at how far the Angels have come since she and five friends dreamed up the first event sitting around a kitchen table after hockey 10 years ago.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been at it this long, actually,” she says with a soft laugh. “I never would have guessed the impact we’d have. I still think it’s amazing what the group accomplishes and how the town still gets behind it.”

It is in the spirit of this astonished gratitude that Sherry says this year’s event will aim to give kudos to those who have supported the Angels over the years, while also focusing on fundraising.

“Of course, it’s still all about garnering money for next year, but this year will be a bit of a celebration as well,” she says.

“There are so many people we know who have supported us, whether by donating, buying at the auction, or even just purchasing a ticket.… I don’t want to give away our secrets, but we are really gearing up to celebrate, just to maybe give back to all those who are coming and have come before.”

To reveal a couple of these secrets, Sherry says a local donor has provided a door prize to win, and the evening’s entertainer, Lethbridge country star Trevor Panczak, will be signing and selling off a guitar during the live auction.

The Angels Within Us 10th annual fundraiser gala is coming up Saturday, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m. at Pincher Creek Community Hall. Tickets are still available but, as always, are going fast.

To purchase your tickets, contact Colleen Parkin at 403-627-2594 or any other board member.

Sherry invites everyone to come and celebrate a decade of neighbours helping neighbours.
